The Sheet Metal Contractors Association of Alberta

The Sheet Metal Contractors Association of Alberta (SMACNA-AB) is the Alberta chapter of the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors’ National Association (SMACNA). Our members are fellow HVAC contractors, suppliers and manufacturers throughout the province including Calgary, Edmonton, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Red Deer, St. Albert, Acheson, Camrose, Nisku, Sherwood Park, Airdrie, Cochrane, Eckville, Longview, Red Cliff and Rocky View.

For more than 20 years, we've represented hundreds of Contractors, Manufacturers, and suppliers and helped advocate their interests across Alberta. This has led to policies being implemented that directly benefited business operations in our industry.

Industry Advocation

SMACNA-AB is the HVAC industry's voice in Alberta. Our organization continues to work with all levels of government on behalf of our members. Our Technical Liaison Committees in both of our Edmonton and Calgary chapters meet monthly to discuss our members' issues, whether you are a small contractor or one of the largest in Alberta. We are here to be your voice on the Building and Gas Sub Councils. Municipalities, Alberta Industry Training.

SMACNA Alberta has representatives on the Alberta Construction Association on three of their committees: Contracts Committee, Safety-WCB and the Government Action Committee.

SMACNA Manuals

As the Alberta Chapter of the Sheet Metal & Air Conditioning Contractors’ National Association (SMACNA), we provide the ability for members and non-member to purchase their manuals directly from our Alberta chapter.

Events

Our two chapters in Calgary and Edmonton have monthly membership meetings where the issues of the industry are discussed. Updates from both municipalities, sub-councils and committees are given. SMACNA-AB also hosts major events during the year ranging from golf tournaments, Lobsterfest and Oldtimers (Calgary) and the Christmas Gala. SMACNA-AB also provides periodic seminars with speakers from SMACNA National.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions in 2020 we were unable to provide any of our normal events. We are anticipating that our golf tournaments scheduled for June will move forward. Monthly meetings will move to online starting January. Once COVID restrictions are lifted we will return to our regular meetings and events.

SMACNA-AB – Why should you be a member? What do we do?

  • We consult with local and provincial governments and inspectors regarding code changes, permits, standards of practice and legal issues concerning our industry and advocate on behalf of members facing the same questions, challenges, concerns and issues in Alberta's HVAC industry.
  • We have two Technical Liaison Committees that meet monthly with their respective inspectors in Calgary and Edmonton to deal with SMACNA-AB members' problems.
  • We sell SMACNA manuals to members at a significantly discounted rate.
  • We partner with Federated Insurance to provide commercial insurance for our members at a reduced rate
  • We partner with the Mechanical Contractors Association to provide health
  • We provide members with up-to-date information on the industry and make them aware of any current standards released by Municipal Affairs that may affect their business practices.
  • We are a member of the Alberta Trade Contractors Coalition, which has 11 other trade association members. Together, we are continuing to work hard to pass prompt payment legislation in Alberta.
  • We have representation in several industry-related associations, including SMACNA, SMWIA#8, Calgary Construction Association, Building Sub-Council, Gas Sub-Council and the Alberta Apprenticeship Committee. We also have representatives on the Alberta Construction Association with their Government Action Committee, Contracts, and Safety/WCB and Standard Practices
  • We provide a scholarship program for SMACNA-AB members' apprentices. The SMACNA-AB membership has raised over $55,000 since 2013 and has awarded 62 scholarships totaling $31,000 as of 2020.
  • We partner with SMACNA National and other trade associations to provide industry-specific educational seminars for our members every year.
  • Monthly member meetings in Calgary and Edmonton provide association, committees and municipal inspector updates for both Cities.
  • We host various social events throughout the year, three golf tournaments, Lobsterfest, Oldtimers, Curling and Fishing tournaments and our Christmas Gala.  We host and co-sponsors many social events with the Mechanical Contractors Association and ASHRAE, Southern Alberta, a great way for members to network within our industry every year.
