Welcome to the

Industry Advocation

SMACNA-AB is the HVAC industry's voice in Alberta. Our organization continues to work with all levels of government on behalf of our members. Our Technical Liaison Committees in both of our Edmonton and Calgary chapters meet monthly to discuss our members' issues, whether you are a small contractor or one of the largest in Alberta. We are here to be your voice on the Building and Gas Sub Councils. Municipalities, Alberta Industry Training.

SMACNA Alberta has representatives on the Alberta Construction Association on three of their committees: Contracts Committee, Safety-WCB and the Government Action Committee.

SMACNA Manuals

As the Alberta Chapter of the Sheet Metal & Air Conditioning Contractors’ National Association (SMACNA), we provide the ability for members and non-member to purchase their manuals directly from our Alberta chapter.

Events

Our two chapters in Calgary and Edmonton have monthly membership meetings where the issues of the industry are discussed. Updates from both municipalities, sub-councils and committees are given. SMACNA-AB also hosts major events during the year ranging from golf tournaments, Lobsterfest and Oldtimers (Calgary) and the Christmas Gala. SMACNA-AB also provides periodic seminars with speakers from SMACNA National.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions in 2020 we were unable to provide any of our normal events. We are anticipating that our golf tournaments scheduled for June will move forward. Monthly meetings will move to online starting January. Once COVID restrictions are lifted we will return to our regular meetings and events.

About

The SMACNA-AB

The Sheet Metal Contractors Association of Alberta (SMACNA-AB) is a chapter of the Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors National Association (SMACNA).

SMACNA-AB:

  • is a provincial association with membership in Calgary, Edmonton, Camrose, Nisku, Sherwood Park, Red Deer, Sylvan Lake, Airdrie, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat and Redcliff.
  • is an Association of fellow contractors, suppliers and manufacturers that lobbies for changes and issues that affect it’s members and the HVAC industry.
  • gets involved with local and provincial government with regards to code changes, permits, standards of practice, legal issues. etc. Without SMCAA these issues would be forced on industry without any consultation and with little recourse to change them.

A Message from our

Executive Director

Welcome to the NEW Sheet Metal Contractors Association of Alberta (SMACNA-AB) website.

SMACNA-AB is excited to have our shiny new website go live.  We hope that the information that we are providing you is valuable.

The past year has been extremely challenging for so many companies.  COVID-19 indeed hasn't discriminated against the size of any company or individuals. Worldwide we have seen the cancellations of many global events, and as an organization, we were not immune to that.

We are hopeful that 2021 brings us a renewed sense of hope and the possibility of seeing our members gather again in solidarity with our industry.

Prompt Payment Legislation has been a big part of this organization since 2011.  Through the years, we have never strayed from the common goal of all associations which belong to the Alberta Trade Contractors Coalition ("ATCC") to see that Prompt Payment Legislation is adopted into law.  The ATCC will be asked to provide input into developing the regulations and recommendations for adjudications.

At the time of this writing, the third reading of Bill 37 for Prompt Payment Legislation has occurred, with Service Alberta Minister Nate Glubish announcing the newly renamed Prompt Payment and Construction Lien Act on December 1, 2020.  We are looking forward to 2021, and when this becomes law, it will directly affect residential and commercial contractors.

Questions

By becoming a member of SMACNA-AB, you will have a stronger voice in the construction industry.  As a member, you can be part of like-minded business owners and managers who help guide our representatives on building codes, gas codes etc.  Working directly with municipalities, we help our members who have issues with inspector's interpretations find resolution and hopefully a better understanding of what resulted in an inspection failure, or the like.

SMACNA-AB provides insurance programs for commercial insurance through partnerships with Federated Insurance and employee health insurance through the Mechanical Contractors Association.

Our chapter provides seminars directly from SMACNA National. These are in-person seminars that will resume once COVID-19 and travel restrictions are removed, as these are speakers from the USA.
