Update to SMCAA Members in regards to the Standata slated to be released on July 31, 2010.

The SMCAA will be presenting their concerns and suggestions in regards to the Standata that is set to be released in July to the Gas Technical Council on May 20, 2010 in Edmonton.  If you would like more information or would like to speak with one of the committee members about what SMCAA is doing on your behalf, please contact Wilma Agnew (403) 250 7040 or email [email protected]

The latest version of the Natural Gas and Propane Installation Code (B149) has the potential to change how gas appliances can be vented out the side wall of buildings, especially in residential applications.

The addition of point 8.14.8.a) “A vent shall not terminate where it may cause hazardous frost or ice accumulations on adjacent property surfaces” is alarming in that it doesn’t define what a hazardous condition is, or how to measure or mitigate this hazard.

Alberta Municipal Affairs is currently developing a Standata to the B149.1.10 Section 8.14.8.a which will include specifics on how to deal with this added point.  The preliminary proposals have been alarming in that the trend is to limit venting appliances into side yards of residential units.

This will have an enormous impact on SMCAA member businesses, home builders, and the public. With support from the Alberta Home Builder’s Association, Calgary Home Builders Association and the Edmonton Home Builders Associations, SMCAA will be meeting with the Gas Technical Council to discuss options and attempt to come to a mutually agreeable solution to this matter.
